In a recent survey of 119 local rural authorities East Dorset were the highest ranked Dorset District for Quality of Life.  Performance was measured on key indicators including the labour market, the housing market, the environment, education and health.  Nice to see use squeezing in one place higher than our neighbours in the New Forest!  See more on this at http://www.rsnonline.org.uk/environment/revealed-quality-of-rural-life-in-britain.

I love this Campaign to tidy up neglected public space.  Join in!  See more at http://www.guerrillagardening.org/index.html

FiB were out planting yet more bulbs on Sat 26th November.  This year we concentrated at the Wimborne Road end of Victoria Road, and 1000 tulip, daffodil and hyacinths were put in by volunteers.  Many thanks go to Warren Haskins, Terry Head and Haskins Garden Centre for their continued support of this event with donated bulbs.

The relavent part is taken from the report for those interested in the potential Purple Haze extraction site near Verwood:

 "10.10 A significant number of responses were received regarding this site, with concerns including (but not limited to):
 potential impacts on the Ebblake Bog Site of Special Scientific Interest(SSSI) and especially the Dorset Heathlands SPA;
the potential impacts on the amenity of both local residents and visitors to Moors Valley Country Park; potential health, safety, pollution and amenity impacts of potential landfill operations; additional traffic on the B3081; the water main through the site;
and cumulative impact on the locality with other operations.

 Comment -
The site would contribute by 2030 about 0.75mt of sharp sand and gravel and 4mt of soft sand from west Hampshire. The site
would be progressively restored to forestry and heathland habitat with public access. The site would be a reserve site for non-hazardous landfill and in the event it is not required for this purpose, restoration would require inert fill. Development of the site would need to address: hydro-geological issues relating to the nearby Ebblake Bog SSSI that would include not extracting mineral from the northern portion of the site.
NB. This would effectively move extraction further away from Verwood; visual impact on the users of the B3081 and the Moors Valley Country Park by screening; protection or re-routeing of utilities; amenity of the Moors Valley Country Park; maintenance of local recreational access; protection measures for the nearby Dorset Heathlands SPA; and traffic and congestion on the B3081 to ensure there is safe access, provision made for more vulnerable highway users and impacts on peak flows managed."

The fungi in Harmont Wood tonight are spectacular.  Particularly the Fly Agaric.  The most I've ever seen together.  But also a diverse range of species.

Wow!  So the tallest Sunflower was a 12 footer.  Looking forward to hearing more in  Mags4Dorset.

Janine Pulford from Mags4Dorset and Deputy Mayor Terry Cordery are judging the tallest sunflower competition today for Ferndown in Bloom.  The presentation is on 28th September and all are welcome to attend.

If you don't know Harmont Wood, take a look.  I was just walking through it.  I spotted in five minutes, a woodpecker perched in an oak, which then flew away.  Dragonflies were divebombing in and around the pond.  Saw rabbits towards the Town Green end of the wood.  Just enjoying the dappled sunlight on the floor of this small area made me feel good to be alive.  And the latest addition is a sensory intrepretation board near the pond - thanks to Keith and Christine.  Just close your eyes and feel the shapes of some of the things you might find in and around the wood - great!
